Minutes to Midnight: A Warning From Bondi to Canada
The Canadian-born director of StandWithUs Australia saw Bondi coming — and has a warning for the country he left.
Five months ago, on December 14th, fifteen people were murdered at a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. I want to be clear about something before we go any further: this is not a B-roll news segment. This is real life, and it can happen in any city, on any day. Fifteen lives snuffed out. Fifteen families and an entire community ripped apart.
And let us not pretend we don’t know why they were murdered. The killers went to that beach to kill Jews.
Among the dead was Rabbi Eli Schlanger — the assistant Chabad rabbi of Chabad Lubavitch Bondi Beach, a father of five, gunned down in cold blood at the age of 41.
Michael Gencher was born in Ottawa, a fellow Canadian, who has lived in Australia since 1991 and, since 2024, serves as Executive Director of StandWithUs Australia. He is, in his own words, a mad Zionist. And he is a man who saw this coming and said so out loud, to anyone who would listen.
“It Did Not Happen in a Vacuum”
On May 5th, just last month, a local councillor named Ahmed Ouf stood at a rally in a Sydney park, an event organized by a group calling itself Stop the War on Palestine, and told the crowd: “It’s a must that we globalize the intifada. We have to break the internal chains and invite others.” Though the Mayor had cancelled the venue over public-safety fears. He went ahead anyway — an elected official, doubling down, in the shadow of a massacre, while a Royal Commission into antisemitism was literally sitting. What poor form. Reverse the victim status, rub salt in the wound, and keep handing out the license.
“This (violence against Jews) does not happen in a vacuum,” he told me. The last two and a half years of Jewish life in Australia have been setting the stage for something as horrific as the massacre at Bondi Beach. In September, just months prior to the terror attack, at a StandWithUs event held in that very same park — Michael stood up and warned, in plain language, that we are going to see people hurt. “We all knew it was coming,” he said. “We didn’t imagine in our wildest nightmares that there would be a massacre and fifteen people murdered.”
He traces the red line all the way back to October 9th, 2023 — two days after the worst slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust — when a mob gathered in front of the Sydney Opera House. Not to mourn. Not to call for the end of Hamas. They were chanting, as Michael put it, where are the Jews, gas the Jews. And the federal and state governments took no action whatsoever. That was the line, and once it was crossed, the rest followed.
“He Has Blood on His Hands”
Anthony Albanese is the Prime Minister of Australia. Is it fair to say you hold him directly responsible for the fifteen murdered at Bondi Beach?
“I do, Israel. I do.” Michael says.
He laid out a cascade of failures across all three levels of Australian government — federal, state, and local — and was unequivocal: Anthony Albanese has blood on his hands. So do the state premiers, Victoria chief among them. A government, he explained, that has never once been willing to name the problem out loud. Radical Islam. Islamism. You have not heard those words from Canberra. You have heard everything except the truth.
So how does a community of roughly 117,000 people hold a government accountable when it has no power at the ballot box? It can’t, really — not through votes. What it fought for, and won, is a Royal Commission, the highest level of inquiry the country offers. Michael is skeptical of it, and honest about that skepticism. But his hope is simple: that it finally assigns blame, and finally names what successive governments have refused to name.
And here is the sickness of it. Even the Royal Commission — an inquiry into antisemitism itself — has become an occasion for more antisemitism. The mainstream commentary, Michael told me, asks why this tiny community is getting so much attention. The answer they give themselves is the oldest one in the book: the lobby. Their influence. In the very first week of hearings, a man walked back and forth in front of the building wearing a shirt with a swastika on it. That is what they are facing. That is the temperature.
Did the Bondi massacre cool any of it down? The opposite. “I don’t want to be right again,” he said — but December 14th was not the end of the violence. The terrorists achieved exactly what they set out to achieve: fear, and the normalization of violence against Jews.
Could It Have Been Prevented?
A resounding “Yes”, Michael claims. There were immediate failures — police failures, and the limits of a communal security group that is made up of extraordinary, generous volunteers who are not, and were never meant to be, counter-terrorism experts. But the deeper failure is the one I keep coming back to: the refusal to name radical Islam.
This is where Michael took the gloves off, and I respect him for it. He has spent a large part of his career — before StandWithUs and during it — in outreach to Muslim communities. He believed in the alliship. And since October 9th, he told me, almost none of that leadership came out to denounce, to support, to do anything. The problem is radical Islam, not the Muslim community at large. The hero of Bondi Beach that day was himself a Muslim man who risked his life to save others. But the failure — failed migration policy, failed education, failed social systems — is real, and it is no longer coming from new arrivals. It is second- and third-generation, Australian-born. Ahmed Ouf is a pharmacist. An elected official. A respected man in his community. That is the part that should keep you up at night. It is called subversive antisemitism.
I raised what is happening here in Canada — the CRA stripping century-old Jewish charities of their status without process while organizations tied to the Muslim Brotherhood operate freely. Is that leverage being used in Australia too? “It is”, Michael confirmed. He knows of two organizations right now fighting challenges to their charitable status. The quiet question that follows Jewish organizations everywhere now is the same: does your group support Israel? Engage openly, and you put a target on your back.
The Line Keeps Moving
I asked Michael whether “minutes to midnight” is a fair way to describe how Jews everywhere are feeling. “Should I stay or should I go now?”
He did not give me a comfortable answer, and I didn’t want one. He told me he will not ignore history, or the lessons of his father. He knows his family’s history — why they left Eastern Europe, and what it cost them to decide. As a young man he never truly understood the weight of that decision. He understands it now. “The line keeps moving,” he said. “And at what point does that line hit the wall and there’s nowhere to move? I answered him; “I think we are at minutes to midnight”.
They Are Hunting Us. So We Are Hiding.
There is a website in Canada called findidfsoldiers.net. People tell me I shouldn’t publicize it. “LOL Hide Jew!” The web site exists to hunt Jews — it lists Canadians who served as lone soldiers in the IDF, along with their families. My son is on it. I am on it. I have spoken to every level of government, and no one will shut it down. I’d like to launch findislamicjihadists.net and see how fast that one disappears.
Australian Jews are seeking what’s called silent elector status: the legal burying of your own home address so that you cannot be found. He has done it for his own family and he has hidden where he lives.
“How bizarre is that,” he said, “that you can’t find out where I live now.”
In a Western democracy, in 2026, Jews are using the machinery of the state to erase themselves from the record before someone else can use it against them. Ninety years ago, a regime in Europe built lists of Jews and their addresses and recorded what was done to them. Today, Jews are racing to delete themselves from the list first.
A Message to Canada
Is a Bondi Beach around the corner for Canada? “Unfortunately” Michael said to me, “I see it likely.” He pointed to the car ramming at a Jewish facility in Michigan, to the stabbings in Golders Green in the UK. He believes Canada is primed — with far greater access to guns than Australia. He looked at the Canada of the Stephen Harper years and called it an amazing, glorious golden era for Jews, and marveled at how fast it has all changed. His blunt prescription: “Change your government. Change your government. That’s the message.”
The sad truth is that if we held an election today, the same government would likely come back even stronger. So what do we do on the ground, in North York, in Montreal, in Vancouver, to stop a Bondi from happening here? I’ll tell you what we cannot do; complacency, comfort, and denial. Too many of us, even in Australia where the massacre has already happened, still tell ourselves it can’t happen to us. Michael’s message is clear: Consolidate communal resources. Build real strategies to educate and to protect. And then Michael made his central recommendation to the Australian Royal Commission, one Canada should be writing down: look at the European model — France, Belgium, Germany, the UK — where trained military guard Jewish assets, not security guards and not police. Because police, as he put it, are there to chase criminals. They are not there to thwart a terrorist attack. I’ve asked the guards at my own shul how fast they can run. I think I know the answer.
Minutes to Midnight
So here is where we are. Michael Gencher warned Australia. He stood in a park in September and told them people were going to be hurt, and the country gave his community a week of sympathy, called it an attack on a beach rather than an attack on Jews, and went back to business. Three months later they buried fifteen people.
Now a Canadian is standing on the far side of that catastrophe, looking back at the country of his birth, and telling us the very same thing he told Sydney before December 14th.
The line keeps moving toward the wall. And the only question left is the one I keep thinking about: Is Canada done? Are Jews in Canada done? My opinion - It is minutes to midnight.
